The Lethbridge School District No. 51 is looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic individual to serve as the First Nations Metis Inuit (FMNI) Culture and Language Instructor/Teacher within our Schools.
The primary responsibility of the FNMI Language and Culture Instructor/Teacher is to support the delivery of curriculum through collaboration with school staff, department managers, specialists, teachers and the FNMI Liaison Team. The job plans the delivery of academic, vocational and leadership building, within a culturally sensitive context for all students in the District while building meaningful relationships specifically with students of FNMI ancestry.
The FNMI Language and Culture Instructor/Teacher also supports holistic learning in areas such as cultural teachings, traditions and spirituality through the Alberta Program of Studies, First Nations Métis and Inuit Outcomes. Specific Teaching Education is preferred however, Blackfoot Language and Culture is also a preferred asset. There is flexibility in qualifications if candidate possesses the skills required to provide the required services.
Responsibilities will include:
- Develop programming in collaboration with the teacher in classrooms and non-traditional settings;
- Build resource library in collaboration with liaisons and teachers;
- Engage in delivery and create sustainable programs;
- Collaborate with teachers to align curriculum with the appropriate level learner outcomes;
- Provide positive role-model for students by participating in scheduled and informal recreational activities;
- Assist with and participate in special events, conferences, expositions and other professional learning activities;
- Identify opportunities to support learning outside of school hours;
- Demonstrate and coordinate First nations, Métis and Inuit traditional activities into curriculum;
- Coordinate First Nations, Métis and Inuit Family Night at various school sites;
- Teach Blackfoot Language & Culture at the elementary level;
This teacher will possess the following:
- a sound understanding of teaching context and contributing variables;
- deep understanding of subject disciplines taught and pedagogical approaches based on best practice;
- understanding of sound planning, assessment and instructional practices;
- understanding of classroom management strategies that contribute to a positive learning environment;
- the use of technologies in meaningful ways for teaching and learning;
- qualities of a reflective practitioner who engages in professional learning to grow in areas reflected in the Teacher Quality Standard;
- commitment to the school community with respect to professional relationships;
- a belief in collaborative practice and teamwork;
- active contribution to school and student activity, and overall ability to develop effective relationships within the school and community;
- a dedicated commitment to supporting students of First Nations, Métis and Inuit ancestry;
- effective time management and organizational abilities within a school context;
- Candidate will have extensive experience working with FNMI populations and infusing FNMI culture and language into the classroom.
- Candidate will have the ability to instruct Blackfoot language at the elementary level.
- Candidate will be able to work autonomously in elementary school settings.
- Candidate has successful evidence of working collaboratively with colleague
Applicants must posses or be eligible to obtain an Alberta Teaching Certificate.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

In order to ensure and maintain a safe and secure working and learning environment, applicants new to Lethbridge School District No. 51 WHO ARE OFFERED EMPLOYMENT must provide:
- A satisfactory police information check; including Vulnerable Sector Check from Police Services or an RCMP detachment
- A satisfactory Intervention Record Check from South Region Alberta Child and Family Services
- Proof of photo identification, may be a valid driver’s licence, provincial identification card as issued by a licensed government registry office, valid passport or Nexus card. If one cannot be provided, a new card must be obtained and proof of application provided within three days of hire
- Documentation of a valid Social Insurance Number in the employee’s legal name
